News Flash! DYCC Postponed

News Flash!

The dates for Deaf Youth Camp of Color (DYCC) have been postponed to Sunday, June 27th – July 11th, instead of June 13-27, 2010. The main reason for the change is that most of the schools along the east coast will close around the second and third week of June and they wish to send some of their students to the Camp.

Students within the ages of 13-17 need to schedule a flight to Portland, Oregon for Thursday the 24th of June to attend the National Deaf People of Color Conference. They will stay at cottages at the Washington School for the Deaf, Vancouver, Washington, near Portland during the conference weekend. Then on Sunday, June 27th, they will go to Camp Taloali in Stayton, Oregon.

The deadline for the complete application and payment for the camp is being extended to June 1st. Send all documents to: DYCC/attn: Laurene E. Simms, 800 Florida Ave., NE #2090, Washington, DC 20002.

Please contact the DYCC Administration Team for more information. The DYCC Administration Team includes Tim Albert, Alim Chandani, Diana Cho, Shilpa Hanumantha, and Ivy Velez. The DYCC email address is: dycc2010@gmail.com.

For more information about the DYCC, please visit the website: www.dycc.org.

Thanks for your attention.

Deaf People of Color Conference: Discount

Hello, everyone!

Because of the current economic crisis and the hardships it’s caused for Deaf people of color, the Conference registration fee has been reduced from $400 to $250. The registration deadline has been extended to May 30.

Yes, that’s right–only $250 for registration!

Rooms at the DoubleTree Portland can be reserved until May 23, so please don’t delay.

To save even more money, you can share a room at the DoubleTree. Two persons can comfortably share a single room, bringing down the cost per person to a reasonable $75 per night.

Please share this with the members of your organizations. There IS strength in numbers, and by being there, we’ll make history.

Tell your members, colleagues, and friends about the Second National Deaf People of Color Conference. Register by May 30 to save money. Again, the registration fee is only $250.

Answering Questions About DHHMC

Today I came across some unfortunate news from New Hampshire: Eric Eliason, of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Mortgage Consultants (DHHMC), was arrested and accused of fraudulent mortgage practices.

This came as a surprise to me, as I am sure it does for many members of the Deaf community in New England. I know this is a very difficult time for everyone who is involved.

As people’s curiosity about the matter has grown, however, questions arose when folks visited DHHMC’s web page and found my face on the welcome video.

For those who were wondering, I wanted to take a moment and clarify by saying that I am simply a performing artist and do not work for DHHMC or endorse its services. I was independently contracted over a year ago to make the videos and am not part of the business.

I know this is a tough time for everyone involved in the matter and hope that this addresses any concerns others may have.
